Basic Refresher
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is designed to prepare a person to enter the Emergency Medical Services Field, at a basic level position as an EMT. The EMT course is taught according to DOT curriculum and the course hours exceed the minimum number of course hours required by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Once the student has successfully completed the course, they are eligible to test for certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Once certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, the student is eligible to apply for certification with the Texas Department of State Health Services (which is required to be an EMT in Texas). The class is $640.00 and this will include the book, background check, and uniform shirt. A non-refundable application fee of $100.00 is required to reserve a space in the class. The class is $740.00 in total. This Class will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 1800 to 2200 at the San Marcos Training Center. 350 Barnes Dr. Suite 102, San Marcos Texas, 78666. Class begins May 26, 2009. Prerequisites: Reading and Comprehension skills at the eleventh grade level. Must provide proof of the following: DPS Criminal History (will be done by San Marcos Training Center) Immunization Record: Hep B Series (first dose minimum), Tetanus (last 10 years), Polio, MMR, and a negative PPD or Chest X-Ray in the last 12 months. Ability to perform duties as assigned by the Functional Position Description Be willing to learn.
Paramedic
Didactic: 560 hours (Lecture and Lab) E.M.S. Rotations: Minimum 264 hours Emergency Dept. Rotations: Minimum 136 hours Total: 960 hours The course lasts approximately thirteen calendar months. The course meets from 6p-10p on as well as an average of two to three Saturday classes a month which meet from 9a-6p. Course Overview Paramedic Course is designed to prepare the student to enter the advanced level of prehospital care. The course covers skills such as advanced airway, IV therapy, medication administration, defibrillation, transcutaneous pacing and synchronized Cardioversion. The Paramedic Course is taught to the DOT curriculum and the number of course hours exceeds the minimum number of course hours as assigned by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Once the student has successfully completed the course, they are eligible for certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Once certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, the student is eligible to apply for certification or licensure with the Texas Department of State Health Services (which is required to be a Paramedic in Texas). Paramedic Refresher
The course lasts approximately three weeks. The student will either attend Monday/Wednesday classes or Tuesday/Thursday classes for the entire course period. The course meets from 9:00am - 6:00pm each day. Course Overview The DOT Paramedic Refresher Course is an approved 48 hour refresher course for NREMT-Paramedic recertification. This course is designed to review all aspects of Paramedic prehospital care. This course is a combination of lecture and skills lab. Upon successfull completion, the candidate will be able use this course for either NREMT or TDSHS Paramedic recertification/relicensure. A candidate may also use this course so that they can obtain NREMT-Paramedic certification.
EMS Instructor
Course Overview Emergency Medical Service Instructor Course is designed to prepare the student to begin teaching EMS courses. The EMS Instructor Course is taught to the DOT curriculum and the number of course hours meets the minimum number of course hours as assigned by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The student will present two presentations in this course and there is approximately 10-20 hours of work that has to be done outside of class. Once the student has successfully completed the course, they are eligible for certification with Texas Department of State Health Services.
